This past week I have left my job in marketing to pursue illustration full-time.
Yes, I did.
I have worked in marketing for decades (did I just say decades?), in various roles from graphic design to sign-making to digital marketing to marketing to communications. Oh, I have always done side hustles which meant long days at a computer or desk, so illustration isn’t completely new to me. But, full time work + side hustles = little time to actually market myself.
(this is part of my studio, complete with two assistants)
As you probably gathered, I’m a bit older than an eager, bright-eyed illustrator fresh out of school. I’m a VERY late bloomer.
But, it is a dream I have always had, ever since I was 6. The spark of a dream was given to me by my Grade One teacher, Mrs. Taylor. We were all filling out our notebooks, you know the ones where the top was where you drew and the bottom had lines to write. I, of course, focused heavily on the drawing area. Mrs. Taylor came up behind and and said “oh, we have an artist in the class”. And that was the spark. Up to that point I didn’t have a word for what I was doing.
It has been something I’ve carried with me my whole life. No matter what, I just haven’t let go of that dream.
So, now was the time to leap. And leap I have.
As I embark on this journey, I thought I would share what I learn along the way and maybe meet other people such as myself. I would love to hear your journeys and am looking forward to making new friends here.
